The film began shooting in Vancouver in March 2016. The first part of the "Moving Maze" series has only Thomas a character perspective, and the second part has 3 different character perspectives. The film has 5 different perspectives of characters. In order to meet the shooting needs, the main creative team sought a shooting location to provide a rich diversity of landforms to meet the needs of scorched earth, cities, refuges, and other scenes in the film. Therefore, they went to Cape Town, South Africa, and went deep into some very distant places, such as the Kalahari Desert and St. Helena Bay.
In order to shoot the scenes in the film, the main creative team used trucks to transport a train and assemble and run it on rails to shoot. Shortly after the filming started, the protagonist Dylan O'Brien accidentally fell from the roof of the car during the filming and was run over by a moving truck, causing concussions, facial fractures and muscle tears, and filming was interrupted. This accident delayed the movie for a whole year before it could be restarted.
