The show follows the work and life of a Madam Secretary
who must find a balance between international crises, office politics and a complex family life. It is said that the prototype of the Madam Secretary
is Hillary Clinton, but CBS refused to admit it.
The shrewd, determined, and brilliantly intelligent Elizabeth McCord ( Téa Leoni ) has just been named US Secretary of State, finding a balance between international foreign affairs, office politics and various "circumvention procedures." While tackling national affairs, she faced a lot of personal troubles—both from the White House and home. Elizabeth, a former university professor and later a CIA analyst, resigned for ethical reasons. She has returned to the public eye following the mysterious death of the former secretary of state and the order her return to the White House has been ordered by the president. The President respected her non-political attitude and appreciated her thorough knowledge of Middle East affairs, her ability to speak multiple languages fluently and her creative thinking. In fact. nothing ever restrained her thinking.
McCord's team includes his chief of staff, Nadine Trevor (Emmy winner Beebe Norvelsh), speechwriter Matt Mahoney (Geoffrey Arendt) ), media liaison officer Dess Grant (Patina Miller), and charming assistant Blake Moran (Eric Bergen). Moran was extremely loyal to Elizabeth, in fact he was the only one on Elizabeth's team who was personally employed by Elizabeth.
After arguing over the issues of the third world and skillfully handling relations with foreign dignitaries, she drags her exhausted body back to her warm home, silently supporting her husband Henry (Tim Daly) and two Bright kids (Caitlin Helzer and Evan Rowe) are waiting for her to eat together. For her, "politics" and "crisis" have completely different meanings at home. Henry, a professor of medieval religious history, was so obsessed with his work that he could talk about "Thomas Aquinas" for two hours without repeating a word. Son Adam is in his puberty and is a budding anarchist. Daughter Caroline is as beautiful and outgoing as her mother, and is popular wherever she goes.
