Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welshman began preparing the film in 2012. They spent two and a half years polishing the script. They studied the 800 letters of Van Gogh and the details of his daily life, and figured out his various psychological states before his suicide. The reason why they decided to tell Van Gogh from the perspective of others is because the film is an investigative work that analyzes Van Gogh’s past life and mysterious death, and Van Gogh puts all the experience and emotions of life into his paintings and Among the characters depicted, it is more convincing to select virtual characters who are closely related to Van Gogh, and to tell Van Gogh's life experience through their mouths. Dolota calculated that if she only draws on her own, it will take 80 years to complete the film, so she can only rely on the collective power to achieve her ideals. In 2014, Dolota launched a crowdfunding online to raise funds for the training of painters participating in the film. The production team selected 125 painters and animators from 5,000 candidates to receive painting training. In the training course, they must abandon their own style and learn how to imitate Van Gogh’s painting style and how to make oil painting more suitable for animation.化
