Director Dorota Kobiela said that he has been obsessed with Van Gogh since he was 15 years old. In college, Kobela's thesis researched Van Gogh. At the age of 30, she had been suffering from depression for many years and read Van Gogh's letters when her life was low. Van Gogh's sincerity in painting in the letters deeply infected and inspired her. Because of Van Gogh's words in the last letter: "Only painting can express what I want in my heart", Dolotta had the idea of telling the story of the last day of Van Gogh's life in his paintings. Initially, Dorota Kobiela wanted to paint by herself and make a 7-minute short film to commemorate Van Gogh, until she met Hugh Welshman, who would become her husband. Hugh Welshman was not originally a fan of Van Gogh, but when he went to London to see the Van Gogh Letters exhibition held by the Royal Academy of Art, he was surprised to find that people were willing to queue for three hours to read Van Gogh's letters. people love Van Gogh stimulated the enthusiasm of Welchman.
