Mildred and Richard Loving fell in love and decided to get married. It was a natural thing to do, but he was white and she was black. It was 1958, and apartheid was still prevalent in the United States. The pair were taken to court for violating Virginia's law against interracial marriage, and the couple were jailed unless the man left the state. Richard and Mildred felt the decision was a violation of their civil rights and decided to appeal. After nearly ten years of struggle, they went all the way to the United States Supreme Court. The court rejected the judgment of Virginia, and their marriage was finally rectified. It also prompted the United States to repeal all legal provisions prohibiting interracial marriage, becoming a legend for a generation
