The story follows the idle but charming Dud who joins a Long Beach fraternity after his father's death in search of a simple and happy way of life. In the fraternity dormitory, he and the other members gradually develop relationships and find lost purpose and meaning in life. He will confront his deepest fears and his greatest hopes. Other key characters include Dud's twin sister Liz Dudley and longtime resident Ernie Fontaine in the fraternity dorm. Ernie is black, and he welcomes Dud to this mysterious new world in his own way.
