During the American Civil War, the March family lived in an old house in Massachusetts . Mr. March went with the army to take care of the wounded, leaving his kind wife and four daughters at home. Under the influence of their mother, the four sisters often helped the poor, and they even gave Christmas breakfast to a poor family. When the neighbor Mr. Lawrence heard about the incident, he prepared a big meal as a Christmas present for them. Joe agrees with the old man's grandson Laurie, and McGonagall falls in love with Laurie's tutor John at first sight. Amy sometimes gets awkward with Joe, but soon gets back together. A telegram brought misfortune: Mr. March was seriously ill and was hospitalized. Mrs. March rushed to Washington, and March's house was shrouded in haze. The four sisters helped and encouraged each other to tide over the difficulties. Soon, the mother and father, who had recovered from a serious illness, returned home. The family got together happily again. Four years later, McGonagall and John married. Laurie confided his love to Joe, but was rejected; Laurie went to Europe and met Amy in Nice, France. Joe wrote a novel based on the lives of her and her sisters. March's house became lively again. After the aunt's death, she left her house to Joe, who converted it into a school.

Little Women quotes

  • [first lines]

Marmee March: So you're going to Washington?

Elderly man: Yes, ma'am; my son is sick in the hospital there.

Marmee March: Oh, this will be an anxious Christmas for you.

Marmee March: [finding him a coat] I think this one will do; let's try this. Is it your only son?

Elderly man: No, ma'am. I had four; two were killed, one is a prisoner.

Marmee March: [deeply moved] You've done a great deal for your country, sir.

Elderly man: Oh, not a mite more than I ought, ma'am. I'd go myself if I was any use. Thank you for the overcoat.

    Marmee March: Wait a minute...

Marmee March: [giving him some money] I hope you find him better.

Elderly man: Thank you, ma'am. God bless you; merry Christmas. Merry Christmas!

    Marmee March: Merry Christmas!

  • [last lines]

Prof. Bhaer: Oh, please, please... just, just one moment, before... I have a wish to ask you something. Would you... Oh, I-I... I have no courage to think that... but, but, but, could I dare hope that... I? I... I know I, I shouldn't make so free as to ask. I have nothing to give, but my heart so full and... and these empty hands.

Jo March: [taking his hands in hers] Not empty now.

    Prof. Bhaer: Oh, heart's dearest!

    [they embrace]

Jo March: [drawing him into the house] Welcome home!
