"Little Joe" is an allegorical soft science fiction film by Austrian female director Jessica Hausner, which analyzes the alienation of human feelings in contemporary society, and presents a bizarre postmodern picture with bold audiovisual language. Picture.
The text of the film was born from a high concept, in order to match the coldness brought by high technology. As the director's first foreign language film shot and produced in the UK, the film is full of the harshness of the European island countries and complements the background of the overall story. The color scheme of the movie scene is reminiscent of the lonely field in Edward Cooper's paintings, and people who are free travel among them, freezing in their loneliness. Of course, the implementation of high-concept settings is not an easy task. No matter in the play or the setting, "Little Joe" has its own flaws, especially the colleagues around the heroine Alice, regardless of male or female. There is a sense of impersonality, maybe this is intentional by the director, but the facial makeup makes the film lack of organic sense. The soundtrack full of Eastern style is also somewhat out of tune with the atmosphere of the near future.
Under the cloak of soft science fiction, "Little Joe" is actually about the hidden insecurities deep in the hearts of contemporary people. Although the full screen of red flowers seems so shocking, the pollen they diffuse may be just an illusion in people's subconscious mind. This is also the point that the director has done well, just as the scratching music that keeps reappearing in the film may just be an obvious externalization of some anxiety. The story itself is not perfect, and even some parts have post-modern voids, but as the narrative deepens, what is true and what is imaginary are gradually mixed together, and the space for interpretation is also opened up.
