"Laitakaupungin valot", like other films by director Aki Kaurismäki, is short but dense. More than 70 minutes of film length tells an uncomplicated but really strange story, portraying the life path of a lonely person full of hope and despair for the audience. As far as the story itself is concerned, apart from the director’s approach, the plot itself is not much different from ordinary Hollywood movies. If the director makes the film more sensational and caters to the audience’s cheap sympathy or heroic complex, it is entirely possible to make the hero’s result very sad, even if it fails, it will win the audience’s sympathy and admiration, just like ordinary Hollywood movies often do. The treatment is the same. However, the film took an anti-Hollywood treatment of this behavior. The two challenges of symbolic significance greater than actual significance were quietly resolved, and even all the symbolic meaning behind the behavior was almost resolved. Nowhere to find: Not only was the subject of the hero's challenge unharmed, but he himself was bruised and bruised. This challenging behavior was not paid attention to by anyone and did not inspire sympathy or admiration from anyone, including the sympathy or admiration of the audience. This kind of processing calmly approaches reality and coldly approaches humor.
