During World War II, a passenger ship sank after a fierce battle with a German submarine in the North Atlantic waters. The passengers on board, 5 men and 3 women, escaped in lifeboats. These include famous writer Connie Porter (Tallulah Bankhead), engineer John Kovacs (John Hodiak), telegrapher Stanley Galle (Hume Cronyn), Gus Smith (William Bendix) who suffered a leg injury, and rich Charles Rittenhouse (Henry Hull). Joe (played by Canada Lee), a black attendant on board, Alice (played by Mary Anderson), a nurse, and Mrs. Hayley (played by Heather Angel), who was amentia because of the baby's death. They also rescued a Nazi Willie (Walter Slezak) from a German submarine, which caused countless sharp questions.
