In 1983, commissioned by the Institute of Regional Studies, director Goffrey Reggio produced a non-narrative television film. On this basis, the first work of the Qatsi series "Koyaanisqatsi; Life out of balance" came into being. The film lasted eight years and adopted innovative film language. The whole film has no plot, characters and dialogue, and relies entirely on images and soundtracks. The original name Koyaanisqatsi of "Koyaanisqatsi; Life out of balance" comes from Indian, which has the meaning of madness, confusion, loss of balance, collapse and alternative life. The film's birth process has gone through twists and turns, encountered a serious funding crisis, and received support from filmmakers including Lucas and Coppola. In order to complete the filming work, director Reggio also personally worked part-time as a taxi driver for 5 years   .
