Betrayed her husband. The knife is not important anymore, what is important is the crisis of the middle-aged couple. In the movie, the knife is just a fake suspense. The real suspense should be the completion of betrayal. This suspenseful change in reality and fictitiousness can already see Polanski's outstanding talent in structuring films and revealing people's psychology.
The jazz-style music in the movie is a highlight. It is combined with the plot, which makes people feel that Polanski is born an American Polish director, but very close to the Hitchcock style. So Hollywood's decision to invite him was not blind. But Polanski himself didn't seem to be completely trapped in his talent as a master of suspense at the beginning.
