Nora is about to enter the wedding hall, and her father's critical illness pulls her back to her hometown of Grenoble. So the memories brought her control, imitation, closeness, alienation, hatred, tolerance with her father; imbalance and hurt with her sister; dependence on her dead husband who was also the biological father of her son Elias , love, hatred, the possibility and impossibility of living together slip out of time. She lives in the present, but faces the past.
Eastman, a mildly suicidal musician, was accidentally locked up in psychosis. In comical hospital treatments, in absurd psychoanalysis, and in visits from parents, lawyers, and Nora, he tells of little secrets in his family, his relationship with his sister, his seven-year romance with Nora, and his relationship with Nora. Elias' spiritual father-son relationship, and the resentment his colleagues hold against him.
Eventually, Eastman and Nora meet again, at which point Eastman rejects Nora's request that he raise her son. In the museum, he and Elias browse art from different periods and regions. Eastman almost gushed about his reasons for refusing to be a father to his children
