Billy Wilder, who wanted to be a lawyer, gave up his job as a reporter for a Vienna newspaper to come to Berlin. He started writing screenplays in 1929 and got involved in the film industry. Before Hitler came to power, he wrote screenplays for many German films. Fearing trouble because of his Jewish heritage, he moved to Paris and, after co-directing a film, came to Hollywood via Mexico in 1933. Unable to understand English, Billy Wilder spent a lot of time learning English, and in 1937 he sold a script to Paramount to start his American film career.
