The novel based on the film, is the directorial debut of the famous actor Jiang Wen. The work has a very realistic depiction of the life and confusion of teenagers during the Cultural Revolution, using some surreal techniques that were relatively new in China at that time, reflecting the violence and obscure love of teenagers in that era. The film modified some cruel plots in the original work, and enhanced the description of the emotions between the characters, trying to more realistically depict the immature and ignorance of youth and violence, which happened to be the characteristics of that era. What is more meaningful is that the film reflects the state of ignorance and violence in the whole country and society at that time through the immature and ignorance of the teenagers who are growing up; growing to maturity, and shows an era with the depiction of the stories of teenagers. And the chaos of a country with grow up; grow to maturity.
