As a result of 9/11, the United States set up an anti-terrorist coalition to fight against terrorism, and a large number of American allies and followers also joined the war. As one of the allies of the United States, Canada also fell into the quagmire of war. With the Afghan war as the background, the Canadian film "Hyena Road: le chemin du combat", released in 2015, is such an anti-war film.
The four-man sniper squad headed by Ryan is a squad of the Canadian Special Forces in Afghanistan responsible for surveillance missions. Their main task is to set up an ambush along a new road called the "Hyena Park" and monitor Taliban armed personnel who may appear on the road at any time to plant a suicide explosive device (IED). Once the target is found, it will sniper and kill, and report the location of the IED to the headquarters so that the troops patrolling along the road can avoid it.
During a retreat after the end of a latent mission, Ryan found a patch on the road, and shot with a sniping rifle , successfully detonating the IED buried here. But they were subsequently besieged by armed men who had been ambushed by the Taliban and were "made dumplings" in a vineyard. When the situation was critical, a strange old man in the area appeared and took them to hide in their own home. But Taliban forces immediately surrounded the house and launched shelling. After the old man talked with him calmly, the Taliban retreated. Ryan's team retreated as a result.
After returning to the base, Pete Michel, the brigade executive officer of the Canadian Garrison, became interested in this matter and the old man. Pete wanted to use the influence of these people to ensure the safety of the road through contact with local tribal leaders. Pete succeeded in persuading the local leader Bash Daoud to agree to participate in the celebration ceremony on this highway. However, in subsequent contact, Pete discovered that Bash was a man of innocence. He rented the land to the locals to grow poppies, collected rent, and also engaged in human trafficking. Therefore, Pete also wanted to draw other people to the celebration to show the good relationship between the Canadian army and the locals.
After investigation by the Canadian army, it was discovered that the old man who rescued the Ryan team was a hero in the war against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan, named Jihad, nicknamed "the lion of the desert" and "ghost". Moreover, Jihad and Bash are old acquaintances, but there is a deep contradiction in the war of resistance against the Soviet Union. Jihad had already lived in Pakistan, and his return this time was also related to Bash. The land that Bash leased to members of the Jihad family was due to the fighting of government forces and the Taliban and destroyed all the poppies. The family owed Bash 5,000 US dollars. Jihad came back to solve this problem. In order to obtain Jihad's support and balance Bash, Pete takes Ryan to find Jihad. After some setbacks, he finally managed to persuade him to participate in the celebration.
In the process, Bash kidnapped two of his granddaughters to force Jihad to pay and took them to the black market of human trafficking. Jihad immediately retaliated and kidnapped Bash's son. At this time, Pete saw that this was a good opportunity to get rid of Bash-he planned to let the two meet in a separate safe house, and let the two fight to the death. Because it is a personal grievance, even if Bash is killed, it has nothing to do with the Canadian army. No matter who survives, he will always cooperate with the Canadian military. In this way, Ryan's team went into battle again and was responsible for monitoring the meeting between the two.
After the two met, Jihad first returned the $5,000 rent to Bash (in fact, Pete gave Jihad), and then asked him to release his granddaughter. But Bash said he didn't know where they had gone, and asked Jihad to release his son. Unexpectedly, Jihad threw the head of Bash's son in front of him. Bash was furious and drew his pistol at Jihad. At this moment, Ryan disregarded Pete's obstruction and killed Bash. After that, Ryan's team and Jihad were besieged by Bash's men. Soon, three of the four-man team were killed, leaving only Ryan and Jihad. Knowing that the air and ground support could not arrive in time, Ryan asked to cover his area with artillery fire. Under the fierce bombardment of M777 Ultralightweight Field Howitzer , Ryan, Jihad and the Taliban died together. The celebrations organized by the Canadian military with great effort have become a deserted "party."
