The first day of filming in Northern Ireland was a conversation between Sands and a Catholic priest about the decision to implement a hunger strike. The scene lasted ten minutes. The two actors, Michael Fassbender and Liam Cunningham, took a total of four shots before passing.

After the long shot of a conversation between Sands and the priest was taken, the film crew put on a 10-week vacation, waiting for the actor Fassbender to lose weight.
-
In order to play such a "skinny" Sands who died on a 66-day hunger strike, Fassbender locked himself in an apartment by the sea in Los Angeles within two and a half months, ate some blackberries and nuts in the morning, and practiced yoga and running during the day. In the evening, only canned sardines are eaten, and the daily calorie intake is controlled at 900 calories.

During the filming of the film, Michael Fassbender, who was on a diet to lose weight quickly, was worrying for a while. Every time he walked into the supermarket, he would habitually read the calorie meter on the food packaging to calculate whether the calories he received from the food today exceeded the rules of the crew. ·

Father Dominic Moran: I want to know whether your intent is just purely to commit suicide here.
Bobby Sands: You want me to argue about the morality of what I'm about to do and whether it's really suicide or not? For one, you're calling it suicide. I call it murder. And that's just another wee difference between us two. We're both Catholic men, both Republicans. But while you were poaching salmon in beautiful Kilrea, we were being burnt out of our house in Rathcoole. Similar in many ways, Dom, but life and experiences focused our beliefs differently. You understand me?

Bobby Sands: I'm clear of the reasons Dom. I'm clear of all the repercussions. I will act and I will not stand by and do nothing.
