Sisters Margaret and Helen met the wealthy and conservative Wilcox family. After Helen and Paul Wilcos had a brief relationship, she chose to leave the Wilcos family, while Margaret established a rapport with Mrs. Wilcos. Before Mrs. Wilcos died of serious illness, she left a will and gave the country house Howards End to Margaret. Henry Wilcos discovered the will and hid it. Henry expressed his admiration to Margaret and asked her to marry him. Margaret also agreed to Henry's proposal.
Helen accidentally met Leonard Buster, a small clerk after leaving the Wei family. Although Buster had an unfortunate marriage, Helen's intelligence and enthusiasm inspired Buster. Later, Buster was fired by his boss, Helen asked Henry for help, but Henry found that Buster's wife was his former lover, so he refused Helen's request. Emotionally tortured Buster and Helen spent the night together. Helen went to the manor without saying goodbye the next day. After marriage, Margaret always wanted to make the relationship between the two families harmonious. She arranged for Helen to come to Howards End for a holiday, only to find that she was pregnant with Buster's child. The eldest son of the Wilcos family, Charles, thought this was out of order, and he was killed when he had a dispute with Buster, and Charles went to jail for this. Margaret took charge of Howards End and lived in with Henry, Helen, mother and son, thus fulfilling Mrs. Wilcos's will, and the barriers between the two disappeared   .

A rare good film, comparable to Martin's "The Age of Innocence", the details of life are intertwined with class contradictions, and the introverted perspective contains turbulent contrasts of human nature and value judgments on social outlets.

Regardless of the situation, the literary character is too strong. The love between Anthony and Emma is very unconvincing. It's a good shot, but I'm a little disillusioned watching it. It's really in the same style as "A Room with a View". Three and a half. Also, am I the only one who thinks this manor is too rustic?

Howards End quotes

  • Ruth Wilcox: My idea has always been that if we could bring the mothers of the various nations together, then there would be no more war.

  • Margaret Schlegel: I do wish you'd give us Howard's End.
