This is a strange story. The painter John and his wife Irma live on a desolate island. The painter is often troubled by grotesque dreams. When he wakes up, he always draws dreams on a sketchbook. The wife ran into an old elven woman one day and urged her to read John’s diary. After reading it, she discovered her husband’s secret. Later, the castle owner, Mei Kan, described in the diary, asked them to be a guest and found it in the castle. These people have appeared in the husband's sketchbook. On the way home, Elma begged her husband to stay away from those people, but the painter left without saying a word. When he returned home, the painter admitted to his wife that he had killed a child on the cliff. The next day, the mysterious visitor in the castle returned to John’s house and tempted John to come to the castle again. He saw the devil’s ritual and fell into a situation where he couldn’t help himself. Outside the castle, Irma looked for John in vain, but she found his relics, but lost him forever   .

This extremely dark Bergman movie is a deconstruction of fear. The core of fear is demon. Fear will invade in various ways, and demon will also appear in many faces, be swallowed by fear, and then be swallowed by demons. High-class demonic dinners with frequent camera movements are relatively rare in Bergman's films. The overexposure process is very interesting, and hard light is frequently used in shots that emphasize the sense of demons.

An artist’s self-analysis, he hopes to transcend the worldly life and pursue the most beautiful inner purity, but he unconsciously falls into the trap of desire. He longs for the approval of others, but can hardly resist the erosion of vanity, Bergman’s subconscious nightmare of employing people And surrealism to show a person’s process of madness, fear of the future and the inability to let go of the nightmare of the past, when the jackal moment is about to come, Bergman throws himself into the endless emptiness

Hour of the Wolf quotes

  • Baron von Merkens: Does our artist not agree?

Johan Borg: Forgive me. I call myself an artist for lack of a better name. In my creative work there is nothing implicit except compulsion. Through no fault of mine, I've been pointed out as something quite extraordinary, a calf with five legs, a monster. I have never fought to attain that position and I shall not fight to keep it. Megalomania? Yes I've felt it waft about my brow at times, but I think I'm immune . I have only to think of the utter unimportance of art in the world we live in to bring it down to earth , although the compulsion is there all the same.

Corinne von Merkens: There speaks an artist!

  • Alma Borg: We never kiss each other. Can you tell me why? I can count our kisses.
