Billnine when World War II broke out. He lives in a house on the outskirts of London with his parents, sister and sister. The father soon enlisted, and before he left, he taught his son the curveball of "cheating" opponents in cricket. The frequent air raids rattled life, and the children were excited by the sights. People have gradually adapted to this kind of life. My sister falls in love with Bruce, a Canadian soldier. Father also came home to visit them occasionally. Bruce had to leave because of the switch, and also wrote to break up with his sister. The mother and the divorced old lover Mark also still have some feelings. Their family's house burned down unexpectedly and moved to their grandfather's house. My sister is pregnant, but one day while rowing, she sees Bruce who deserted to see him. They can finally take a picture together as a family. Bruce was taken away by the troops, and his sister gave birth to a child. After the summer vacation, Bill had to go to school, but he was pleasantly surprised to find that the school building was blown up and he could skip classes again.

It is adept at capturing something fascinating in a narrative of fascinating, fluid, and natural details of life; and, unlike the plethora of films about the war at the time, it explicitly rejects a standard taste for "internationalization."

A child's perspective on England during World War II. Children's hearts are unique, they can calmly hold a dumb cannonball from the ruins of war. The school was destroyed by artillery fire, but they could happily shout and thank Adolf for not having to go to class for a while. They have unimaginable happiness. When the pain and hatred in your memory are diluted by time, whether you can still retain purity depends on how your heart is.

Hope and Glory quotes

  • Molly: Bloody gin. Always makes me cry!

    [cries]

Mac: Couple of crossed wires. She only weeps when she's happy.

Grace Rowan: Oh, stop it, Molly. You'll start me off now.

    [weeps]

  • Bill Rowen: Don't worry, Sue. We're not gonna be like them when we grow up. We're not even like them now.
