In 1884 in Yonkers, New York. Dolly Gallagher Levi is a person from all walks of life, but her most profitable career lately is to be a matchmaker, marrying men and women. This job is ironic because she married herself before and doesn't like this experience. One of her most recent clients was a stingy retail store owner, Horace Van der Geld, who was his two young clerks, Cornelius Hacker and Barnaby Tucker. Since Horace would not let them rest for a day, Cornelius and Barnaby conspired to close the store and smuggle to New York for a day. Their task was to meet and kiss a girl. In New York, Cornelius saw Irene Molloy, a young milliner, and he set his sights on her. During their meeting, Cornelius didn't realize that she was also one of Horace's possible brides. Except for what happened between Horace, Cornelius, and Irene, Dolly herself may be ready to get married again, despite her words to the contrary.
