"Grbavica" focuses on the painful struggle of the people of Sarajevo after the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina from 1992 to 1995 . During the war in Sarajevo, large-scale rapes left countless women living in the shadows forever. The protagonist in the film is such a Muslim woman who had to work hard to keep this painful secret in order to protect her daughter. The creator of the film hopes to give these people a chance to speak and reflect what is happening in Bosnia. The mass rape of women is a strategy to insult women in wars. After being raped, they were detained in concentration camps until their fetuses were too old to undergo abortion operations. As a result, countless children were born, some became orphans, and some were adopted. Official statistics indicate that the number of women raped at that time reached 20,000, but in fact this number was much larger, about 50,000.
The film "Grbavica" is named after a suburb around Sarajevo, and this place name also has a second implicit meaning ---"Big Belly", which mostly refers to women who were raped and became pregnant. The director spent months listening to the voices of these raped women. She hopes that this film can change the lives of raped women, who are not funded by the Bosnian state like war heroes and families of martyrs
