The story takes place in Peru in South America in the early twentieth century. Fitzgerald, a white Irishman, is called "Fitzcarald" by the locals, and means "fetish obsessed with meaningless things" in the local dialect. As the name suggests, Fitzcaraldo often makes some incomprehensible actions, such as planning to build a railway through the Inca Mountains, producing ice in the tropical rain forest, etc. There is no doubt that these dreams failed in the end. And ended. Fitzcaraldo is an opera fanatic, who admires Caruso, the great Italian opera tenor, and plans to invite him to perform in the opera house deep in the Amazon jungle.
In order to raise funds for the construction of the opera house, Fitzcarardo set foot in the most profitable rubber industry at the time. He bought a savage jungle to mine rubber and planned to go to the forest area of Uruguay for harvesting. With the help of his lover, Fitzcarald bought an old ship and led the crew to the mysterious and terrifying forest area. However, because the boat could not directly reach the rubber forest, he had to drive the boat along a parallel river, and then used thousands of Indians to carry the 320-ton boat across the ridge to another parallel river.
Regrettably, when the big ship crossed the ridge, the Indian let go of the rope in his hand. Finally, as a sacrifice to the sacred river, the big ship crashed into pieces in the rapids. Although Fitzcarald's plan failed, he won a certain spiritual victory, even though defeat was an honor
