Adapted from a blockbuster masterpiece by Nobel Prize-winning author Kertes, about the profound experience of a Hungarian Jewish boy who was imprisoned in a Nazi concentration camp. Kavi was a cheerful teenager. Suddenly, the Nazis occupied Budapest, his homeland, and began to burn, slaughter, and rob Jewish residents. His life changed overnight and fell from heaven to hell. Kavi He hated these unfair treatments, especially he never realized that he was a Jew. However, the successive shocks forced him to face the reality again. His father was taken away by the Nazis, and Carvey himself followed in his footsteps and was sent into a seat. Where the concentration camp receives inhuman treatment, survival is the only goal.
Carvey finally survived many difficulties and was rescued by the US military to regain his freedom. Still wearing a prisoner’s striped clothing, Carvey couldn’t wait to return to his hometown of Budapest, feeling that his neighbors were indifferent and cold-hearted about what happened to him. Old friends persuaded him to forget everything and start again. The concentration camp is a purgatory on earth, and Carvey is tired of hearing this. The comforting clichés can only think about the enlightenment of this tragic experience to life when the night is quiet.

Carvey had several chances to escape bad luck, but he surrendered himself to fate. Does this also imply the fate of suffering for the Jewish nation?

Fateless quotes

  • Rozi: So people don't hate you?

György Köves: Who would hate me?

    Rozi: Everyone.

    György Köves: But why?

    Rozi: Because of this!

    [points at his star]

György Köves: Oh, that? Well, they may hate me, but I don't think it's me they hate. Net me personally, just in general.

    Rozi: They hate in general?

György Köves: In general, yes. Not you, not me, but... the idea of a Jew.

Rozi: Great. Because I for one don't really know what that is.

  • György Köves: [hearing bombers overhead] Will it drop or won't it? That was the question. I just had to recognize the pittance of the stake, so that I could enjoy the game. I was beginning to grasp the simple secret of my universe. I could be killed anywhere, any time.
