On the surface, this is a "karma" crime movie with a ghostly color. But handled by Nagisa Oshima, the film emphasizes crime and death brought about by traditional female lust. The film still shows the most candid aspect of "sex". Details such as Fengji's impulsive shaving of Ashi's pubic hair are exactly the same as the scene where the pussy is stuffed with eggs in "Sensual World", expressing the sexual frenzy of both sexes in the most extreme way. Four people lost their lives because of this out-of-control lust. Ashi and Fengji were just the "handlers" who brought death, but the real "murderer" was the entire closed and ignorant agricultural society. Although Ashi took the life of the kind and simple Yi Saburo, as shown in the film, Yi Saburo was the one who took away A Shi's "beautiful life he once imagined". It was also after a long, hopeless and even maddening patience that Ashi and Fengji came up with the idea of killing. When people saw the surface of the incident and condemned the "adulter and prostitute", Nagisa Oshima saw the deeper level of the incident with compassion.
The film was not made into a very commercial absurd ghost story film, but it was by no means a psychoanalytical film depicting human inner fears. The use of exquisite and beautiful shots and the director's skillful and seasoned narrative techniques, Nagisa Oshima is in the past unique and unique. Farewell to the radical directing technique, under the control of the French producer, the edge has dropped sharply, and it has become well-behaved.
