Eight Below Shooting process

Shooting in Smeiser Town will not be as difficult as shooting in Antarctica, but it is also very difficult. Because the weather there will change drastically within 10 minutes, the film crew must prepare to shoot 3 different scenes every day so that they can shoot any of them randomly according to the weather conditions. The camera crew had to shoot in a cold and humid snowy day. Not only did they not let snow fall on the lens, but they also had to worry about visibility and playback problems under milky sky conditions, as well as problems with laying cables.
Most of the shots of the film were shot on location, but a few shots were too dangerous to be shot outside. In order to shoot the key shots of people and dogs facing danger in the freezing water, the crew set up a scene in a large studio, which is called the "ice scene". To build an "ice scene", on the one hand, it reproduces the frozen fjords in Greenland, on the other hand, it must be a place where the sled dogs can manipulate the animated model seals. Designer Willett has visited Greenland 4 times , and vividly shows that the ice layer alone requires 13 processes to make different ice layers, including transparent ice, river ice, snow ice and ice on icebergs
