As a British director, Christopher Nolan grew up listening to the story of Dunkirk, and the story of Dunkirk has already penetrated into him. During the filming of his debut film "Tracking", Christopher Nolan and his wife Emma Thomas crossed the strait in a small boat to Dunkirk. Although the war was over long ago, he was still shocked by the ruins of the battlefield at that time, and he had a strong idea to shoot a story about Dunkirk.
In order to truly present the Dunkirk retreat, Christopher Nolan spent a lot of time reading first-hand materials from personal witnesses and hired the historian Joshua who had written the book "Dunkirk: The Forgotten Voice" ·Levin, as the historical consultant of the film, the two also visited the veterans of the year and brought the true stories narrated by the veterans to the big screen. In creating "Dunkirk", in order to create a sense of urgency for war, Christopher Nolan once again broke the convention, adopted a non-linear narrative style, and reduced the amount of dialogue to a minimum.
