This film received 16.1 million production budget through financing. The film was produced by the Australian Wild Strawberry Film Company under director Steven Jacobs. The film was shot in South Africa, mainly in the rainy Cape Town and rugged mountains, where the crew also built a farm. The protagonist of the novel, Professor Lu Li, was originally scheduled to be played by British actor Ralph Fiennes .
