This film received 16.1 million production budget through financing. The film was produced by the Australian Wild Strawberry Film Company under director Steven Jacobs. The film was shot in South Africa, mainly in the rainy Cape Town and rugged mountains, where the crew also built a farm. The protagonist of the novel, Professor Lu Li, was originally scheduled to be played by British actor Ralph Fiennes . What the director fancy is the unique gloomy temperament that Fiennes was born with. But in the end, it was starred by the outstanding acting John Malkovich . John Malkovich succeeded in this role with a rich inner drama, accurately interpreting the protagonist Professor Lurie's complex and unpredictable personality and the free and shrinking mind. Markovic's unique temperament is directed at people's hearts. In the film, his eyes are painful and stubborn, selfish and cold, even after tens of thousands of people, in the dark, he can be recognized at a glance.
