Lieutenant Dunbar was a hero in the Civil War, but he wanted to find a new way of life, so he rode Masisco to the magical west. Dunbar was sent to the most remote outpost "Sedgwick" by Major Vanbruu of "Hythe Fort". Dunbar lived alone in an unmanned outpost, and the magnificence of the prairie fascinated him.
Soon after Major Van Bleu committed suicide, and his coachman was killed by the Pawnee, Dunbar lost contact with the outside world. This endless sky seemed to be his paradise. Dunbar lived a peaceful and monotonous life alone. He also made friends with a wolf with white front legs and named it "Two White Sox".
After Dunbar had contact with the Indian Sioux, life was no longer peaceful. The Sioux people talked a lot about Dunbar's arrival, and disputes over how to treat Dunbar. Dunbar decided to take the initiative to find the Sioux. On the way, he rescued a Sioux woman who wanted to commit suicide, "Standing Dance". She was originally white, but she lost her relatives and was adopted by the Sioux since she was a child. After returning the "Standing Dance Boxing" to the Sioux, Dunbar rode away. Dunbar's visit greatly shocked the Sioux, and the Indian leaders agreed to return to Dunbar. The next day, a few Indians came to Dunbar's station. In this way, the two sides began a slow and friendly contact, and gradually Dunbar became a friend of the Sioux, and he also had an Indian name called "Dancing with Wolves."
His riding skills and spearmanship while hunting bison were greatly impressed by the Sioux. Later, he rescued an Indian boy. He soon moved into a Sioux camp and began to be one of them. At the same time, there was a sincere relationship between Dunbar and "Stand-up Dance Boxing". When the brutal Pawnees attacked, Dunbar gave his all his strength to distribute the guns and ammunition in the outpost to the Sioux, helping them defeat the enemy. Dunbar became a hero of the Sioux again. All Sioux people admire Dunbar, and they bless Dunbar's love and union with "Stand-up Dance Boxing". Dunbar also deeply realized the simplicity, kindness and friendliness of the Indians. He lived freely and happily among the Sioux. Aside from the difference in skin color and appearance, Dunbar is already a complete Indian.
However, just when Dunbar wanted to go to the post to retrieve the diary and live forever among the Indians, he found that a group of white soldiers had been stationed there. When they saw Dunbar in Indian costume, they shot. Aimasisco died, and Dunbar became a prisoner. Dunbar's defense of the Indians evoked repeated abuse and beatings. They decided that Dunbar was a traitor. So Dunbar no longer speaks English, and resolutely speaks Indian. The garrison major had nothing to do, so he had to send a team of soldiers to escort Dunbar back to "Fortress Hayes." After the Sioux discovered that Dunbar was captured, they eliminated the escort and rescued Dunbar.
The severe winter came, and the Sioux people settled down in the deep valley. In order not to affect the Sioux friends, Dunbar declined to stay, and left the Sioux village with his wife "Standing Dance Boxing". Thirteen years later, the Sioux people were forced to sign an agreement with the government to abandon the land they had passed down from generation to generation.

Dances with Wolves quotes

  • John Dunbar: [in Lakota; subtitled] We are trying for a baby.

Kicking Bird: [in Lakota] No waiting?

John Dunbar: [in Lakota] No waiting.

Kicking Bird: [in Lakota] I was just thinking that of all the trails in this life, there are some that matter most. It is the trail of a true human being. I think you are on this trail, and it is good to see.

  • Kicking Bird: [in Lakota; addressing the village council] He may be a special man or even a god. I ask that Chief Ten Bears give us permission to talk with him.

[murmurs around the council as Wind in his Hair rises to speak]

Wind In His Hair: [in Lakota; subtitled] I do not care for this talk about a white man at the soldier fort. Whoever he is he is not a Sioux and that makes him less. We took more then a hundred horses from these people and there was no honor in it. They don't ride well. They don't shoot well. They're dirty. Those so-called "soldiers" could not make it through one winter in our country. And all these people are said to flourish? I think they will all be dead soon... maybe in ten years.

    [murmurs circulate around the council]

Wind In His Hair: [in Lakota] I think this fool is probably lost.

[the councel laughs as Wind In His Hair sits back down and Kicking Bird raises his right hand as a call for silence]

Kicking Bird: [in Lakota; subtitled] Wind In His Hair has spoken and his words are strong. It is true that the whites are a poor race and it is hard to understand them. But make no mistake, the whites are coming. Even our enemies agree on this. But when I see one white man alone and without fear in our country, I do not think he is lost. I think he may have medicine. I think this is a man who will speak for all white people. I think this is a man from which treaties may be struck.

[the council murmurs and nods in agreement until Wind In His Hair rises to speak again]

Wind In His Hair: [in Lakota; subtitled] Kicking Bird is always looking ahead and while that is good, he doesn't know this lone white man. This white man cannot hunt, cover our lodges, or feed our children. He is nothing to us! I will take some warriors with me and we will shoot some arrows into the white man. If he truly has medicine, he will not be hurt. If he has no medicine, he will be dead.

[more murmurs are heard as Wind In His Hair sits back down and Stone Calf rises to speak]

Stone Calf: [in Lakota; subtitled] No man on the council can tell another man what to do. But killing a white man is a delicate business. If you kill one, more are sure to come.

Ten Bears: [in Lakota; subtitled] It's easy to become confused by these questions. Before we take action we need to talk about this some more at another time. That is all I have to say. This council is dismissed.
