The film became the highest-grossing film of Miramax Films, and the domestic box office reached 171 million U.S. dollars.
The musical began on April 12, 1975, performed in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and ended on August 27, 1977, with a total of 936 performances (including 24 previews).
The director wanted Catherine Zeta-Jones to show her real long hair in the film, but she insisted on changing to short hair. In an interview with People Magazine, she explained that she did not want to let her long hair hang down on her face, so that it would become a handle for everyone to doubt whether she was really dancing in it.
This is the fourth film performed by Richard Gere after John Travolta refused. Before that, there were "American Gigolo", "Day in Heaven", "The Officer and the Gentleman".
Richard Gere took a tap dance class for three months. His tap dance scene was filmed in half a day.
In the prison scene, Hujak spoke in Hungarian at first, but the last sentence was in Russian. She said "Help, help me, okay"
