Johnny Depp said that his inspiration for Willie Wonka came from the host of TV game shows and children's shows. He also said in the interview that this character should be "partly like Howard Hughes (the "flyer"), partly like a gorgeous rock star of the 70s."
In order to film the scene of the raid on Veruka Salt, the crew trained 40 squirrels.
