The story takes place during the First World War. In London, England, a group of writers and artists seem to be living in a time when there is no war at all. It's a mid-winter afternoon and author Lido Strachey arrives at a friend's house on the south coast of England. The tall, thin unmarried man is a gay. When it was getting dark, Lido walked into the Russian-style living room of a friend's house. Then he passed through the window into the garden. Suddenly, his eyes lit up, and a young girl stood in the courtyard like a blooming flower. The short golden hair is against the setting sun, and the blue eyes are set in the face full of childishness. Her complexion is fair and elegant, and she is simply a beautiful teenager. Lido could not help but be deeply obsessed with it. This woman is Dora Carrington, a woman painter who never follows the rules. That's how Lido and Carrington met in these war-torn times. As the pair strolled along the long British south coast, gunshots of war were heard across the Channel. In this peculiar "music" sound, a 17-year love affair kicked off. Back in London, Lido still flirts with some young men from time to time, but Carrington rejects all suitors. The painter Mark Gertler, who was fervently in love with Carrington, almost went mad at the rejection. Later, when Lido stood in court to defend his not going to war, Carrington praised him for his performance. Mark realizes Lido's influence on Carrington, so he asks Lido to help him. Carrington and Lido spend the weekend at a friend's country house, far away from the pressure of Mark's pursuit of her. She took the opportunity to pour out her deep-seated emotions, but at this time, her friends were anxious for Mark, but they couldn't use it forcefully. Mark takes Carrington on vacation, but it breaks up, and Carrington finally has to tell Mark clearly that he loves Lido.
Lido and Carrington rented a house, and they began an idyllic life together, writing side by side. They are unrestrained, breaking all taboos, and even Mark's drastic actions have not affected them. To Carrington's pain, however, she has to accept a third person in their life - a young man, Ralph Partridge, because Lido is in love with him, and if he decides to leave London, the trio's Lives will be affected. Unable to bear the harsh reality of leaving Lido, she agrees to marry Ralph so that she can stay by Lido's side. Along with Ralph's addition, another young man took their lives by storm. His name was Gerald Brenan, a good friend of Ralph's who had just returned from a trip to Spain. Brenan had a very poetic face, and he soon became Carrington's lover. Life goes on like this with numbness, infidelity, and complex relationships. In 1920, Lido rose to fame with the publication of a book. He bought a villa in the country and continued to pursue boys. Among them, the young and charming Roger Senhouse was particularly favored by him. At this time, Ralph also fell in love with a girl named Francis. After a series of emotional changes, Carrington finally found a balance in her life. She painted and cared for Lido while seeking sexual compensation from other men. Lido fell ill in 1932, and he approached death peacefully under Carrington's attention. In Lido's final days, he did not forget to pour out his love to his partner Carrington. Carrington could hardly face the years ahead without Lido. In the last page of her diary, she wrote: "He died first. She began to try to live without him, and she could not bear it, so she too would die." Sure enough, not long after Lido died, Carrington committed suicide with shotgun  .

Carrington quotes

  • Dora Carrington: [voice-over, a letter] My dearest Lytton, There is a great deal to say, and I feel very incompetent to write it today. You see, I knew there was nothing really to hope for from you, well, ever since the beginning. All these years, I have known all along that my life with you was limited. Lytton, you're the only person who I ever had an all-absorbing passion for. I shall never have another. I couldn't, now. I had one of the most self-abasing loves that a person can have. It's too much of a strain to be quite alone here, waiting to see you, or craning my nose and eyes out of the top window at 44, Gordon Square to see if you were coming down the street. Ralph said you were nervous lest I'd feel I have some sort of claim on you, and that all your friends wondered how you could have stood me so long, as I didn't understand a word of literature. That was wrong. For nobody, I think, could have loved the Ballards, Donne, and Macaulay's Essays and, best of all, Lytton's Essays, as much as I. You never knew, or never will know, the very big and devastating love I had for you. How I adored every hair, every curl of your beard. Just thinking of you now makes me cry so I can't see this paper. Once you said to me - that Wednesday afternoon in the sitting room - you loved me as a friend. Could you tell it to me again. Yours, Carrington.

Lytton Strachey: [voice-over, his written reply] My dearest and best, Do you know how difficult I find it to express my feelings, either in letters or talk ? Do you really want me to tell you that I love you as a friend ? But of course that is absurd. And you do know very well that I love you as something more than a friend, you angelic creature, whose goodness has made me happy for years. Your letter made me cry. I feel a poor, old, miserable creature. If there was a chance that your decision meant that I should somehow or other lose you, I don't think I could bear it. You and Ralph and our life at Tidmarsh are what I care for most in the world.

  • Lytton Strachey: If this is dying, I don't think much of it.
