- The film is adapted from real events that happened in 2009. This is the first time a US ship has been hijacked by pirates in nearly 200 years.
- In a scene at the Shipboard Combat Information Center, an officer wrote the words "Seat 15" upside down on the information board. This is not in the script. Photographer Eclaud accidentally noticed that a sergeant was writing backwards and asked him to do the same in the movie. In fact, the U.S. Navy has always had a tradition of writing backwards.
- Paul Greengrass chose this film instead of directing the film "The Speed of Speed", which is a sports biographical theme.
- In order to find several main actors to play the Somali pirates, the film faces a global call for actors. More than 700 people participated in the audition in Cedar-Riverside, Minnesota, USA.
- It was not until the filming of the scene where the pirates forcibly landed on the cargo ship that Hanks met the actors who played the pirates for the first time. The director's arrangement is to create tension between the two parties.
- The film was shot on the coast of Malta (Mediterranean Sea) for nine weeks. A container ship named Alexander Maersk is used as a stand-in for the Maersk Alabama in the film.
- The lifeboat section of the film was shot in the real sea. Many staff members vomited due to seasickness. Because the space inside the boat is too small, they often vomit on Hanks.
- Richard Phillips wrote his memoir "The Duties of a Captain" from his experience of being kidnapped by pirates, which was bought by Sony shortly after its publication in 2010.
- At the end of the film, the female soldier who examines Phillips's body is played by a real U.S. Navy medic, Danielle Albert. And this scene is not in the script, and it is played by the two on the basis of the normal inspection process.
- The soundtrack of the film was composed by Henry Jackman. But according to rumors, director Greengrass was not satisfied with him, and later Al Clay, Jack Dolman and Hans Zimmer joined in the rewriting.

Captain Richard Phillips: Well, I feel the same way, Ange.
Andrea Phillips: I know this is what we do. This is our life. But it just seems like... the world is moving so fast... right now things are changing so much.
