Brando plays William Walker, a 19th-century British businessman, who is competitive and conceited. The British government sent him to a Portuguese-controlled sugar island in the Caribbean to launch a slave rebellion, giving Britain an advantage in the sugar trade. Walker was so successful that he trained Jose Dulos, a local man, to be the leader of the slaves, thinking that he could rest easy. Unexpectedly, when he returned to the island in England, he found that Dulos had become an unruly bully, so he dealt with him personally.
