Q: What do you think is the main point of "Brother"?
Kita: This is a story about Japanese gangs. Their lives are stray, so that they can die at any time without any worries. They also have wives, of course they are not the ones in normal life. They will not get married because they know they may die at any time.
Question: Do you yourself believe in their creed?
Bei: Of course their values are not entirely desirable. I will not portray them as heroes like other Japanese gangster movies. These gangsters in my film are not heroes. They are stupid and short-sighted.
Q: Do those gangsters like your movie?
Bei: Many of my fans are these so-called gangsters, but not because of my movies, but the way I live in this circle. I'm a person with outdated personality, I don't like hierarchical views, so I often conflict with these things. This is why they like me. I know they like my " Hana-bi " very much .
Q: How do you know about them?
North: It's okay. I once met the boss of the second largest gang in Japan. I was suddenly kidnapped that time, and I thought at the time that my life might not be saved. They took me to a resort on the mountain. It turned out that the eldest daughter wanted to see me. She was my fan.
Q: Do you think "Brother" is the most violent one of your films?
Bei: To be precise, I don't want to make a very violent film. In fact, I originally gave the producer a three-hour version, but the contract was supposed to be a two-hour film, so I had to cut out one hour. And editing makes those violent scenes more prominent and more eye-catching. It is strange that I have often encountered these violence-related problems since "Hana-bi". So I decided to make a film without violence, which is " Kikujirô no natsu ".
