When William Wallace was a child, his father, the Scottish hero Malcolm Wallace, died in the fight against the British army. As a child, he learned culture and martial arts under the guidance of his father's friends. Time is like an arrow. In order to consolidate his rule in Scotland, King Edward I issued a decree allowing the British aristocracy to enjoy the right to marry girls in Scotland, so that the aristocracy can be loyal to the royal family. Prince Isabella is a decisive and talented woman. She knows that this decree will make the British nobles interested in Scotland, but it will arouse the resistance of the Scottish people. The young Wallace returned to his hometown after his studies, and proposed to the beautiful girl Melen, willing to be a man of peace and security. However, Melen was unreasonably snatched and killed by the British army, and Wallace finally broke out. Amid the shouts of the vast number of villagers chanting "After the Heroes", they rose to the ground and killed the British soldiers to declare an uprising.
Scottish nobleman Rob wanted to become a Scottish lord, and under the instigation of his father Booth, he pretended to be in alliance with Wallace. Wallace defeated the attacking British army, and the Scottish aristocratic council named him knight and appointed him the protector of Scotland. Wallace found that these Scottish nobles only considered their own interests, and did not worry about the future of the people and the country at all. Edward eased the situation and sent Isabella to the peace talks. But because the King of England did not consider the freedom and equality of the people at all, and only wanted to buy Wallace as a condition, the peace talks failed. After Isabella went back, she realized that the peace talks were basically a cover. The British king joined the Irish army and the French army to surround Wallace's Scottish army, and she hurriedly sent a letter to Wallace. Under the pressure of the army, the nobles panicked. Wallace led the soldiers in a melee. During the close combat, he accidentally discovered that Rob was colluding with the British king, and he was shocked. Isabella was overwhelmed by Wallace's pride and came to the station to pour her true feelings to him, and the two were intoxicated in the happiness of love. The King of England once again proposed peace talks. Wallace knew it was a trap, but for the sake of peace, he still agreed to go. In Edinburgh, Booth designed a conspiracy to capture Wallace and send him to the King of England. Rob was furious at his father's tricks, and Wallace was finally sentenced to death. Isabella's plea failed. Before the King was dying, she told the King that she was not carrying the blood of the prince, and that this child would soon become the new King.
Before the sentence, Wallace screamed "freedom" and shocked everyone. A few weeks later, when he was enlisted, Rob chanted the slogan of avenging Wallace before, and heroically inherited Wallace's legacy against the British army.

Braveheart quotes

  • Robert the Bruce: [Robert the Bruce is visiting his leper father] Father?

Robert's Father: Ah, come in. Come in.

Robert the Bruce: A rebellion has begun.

    Robert's Father: [pause] Under whom?

Robert the Bruce: A commoner... named William Wallace.

Robert's Father: [another pause] You will embrace this rebellion. Support it from our lands in the north. I will gain English favor by condemning it and ordering opposed from our lands in the south. Sit down. Stay awhile.

Robert the Bruce: This Wallace... he doesn't even have a knighthood. But he *fights*, with *passion*, and he *inspires*.

Robert's Father: [laughing] And you wish to charge off and fight as he did, eh?

    [Robert nods slightly]

Robert's Father: So would I, eh?

    [he laughs again]

Robert the Bruce: Well, maybe it's time.

Robert's Father: [the elder man stops laughing] It is time... to *survive*. You're the seventeenth Robert Bruce. The sixteen before you passed you land and title because they *didn't* charge in. Call a meeting of the nobles.

Robert the Bruce: But, they do nothing but talk.

Robert's Father: Rightly so. They're as rich in English titles and lands as they are in Scottish, just as we are. You admire this man, this William Wallace. Uncompromising men are easy to admire. He has courage; so does a dog. But it is exactly the ability to *compromise* that makes a man noble. And understand this: Edward Longshanks is the most ruthless king ever to sit on the throne of England. And none of us, and nothing of Scotland will remain, unless *we* are as ruthless. Give ear to our nobles. Knowing their minds is the key to the throne.

  • Hamish: Personal escort of the princess.

    William Wallace: Aye.

    Hamish: Musta made an impression.

    William Wallace: Aye.

Hamish: I didn't think you were in the tent that long.
