"Bodyguards and Assassins" is commendable for the organic combination of genre and literary quality with a sense of life. The atmosphere of the times, the sentiments of the people in the market, and the presentation of details are all close to those of Hong Kong people on Hong Kong Island in that era.
Hong Kong people may not be able to understand metaphysical revolutionary beliefs. In their concept, small people in troubled times, traffickers and pawns, use their lives to protect an unfamiliar revolutionist. It is certainly not enough to shout two revolutionary slogans. Each character found a reasonable motive from the world.
