Before Night Falls evaluation action

The film, a biopic of Cuban writer Arenas, provides an insightful account of life after the Cuban Revolution. In the way of shooting, interspersed with documentaries, the pictures and revolutions of Castro's era, as well as the occasional very slow pace in the film, all reflect that the film is a beautifully produced work. Partly in English, part in Spanish, the cast's strong accents and poor quality DVD make it sometimes difficult to read and understand what the film is about. Although there is dubbing, but with less poetry and more explanation, it is also difficult for viewers unfamiliar with the history of South America to understand what the film is about to tell. The film uses water and sea as a metaphor for freedom and escape, and combines different scenes together, making it easy for the audience to feel that the twisting storyline is too long.

Before Night Falls quotes

  • Reinaldo Arenas: My name, for the moment, is Reinaldo Arenas.

  • Reinaldo Arenas: What do you want?

Cuban Police Officer: What do I want... First of all, I want Carlos to frisk this guy.

Reinaldo Arenas: But he's not even dressed.

    Police Officer: What's your name?

Reinaldo Arenas: My name? Franz Kafka.

Police Officer: Hm. You think I am ignorant?

    [Reinaldo shakes his head]

Police Officer: Have any of you ever heard of a Camp called La Isla de Joventud?

    [Everyone declines]

Police Officer: Then maybe you can tell me, when's the last time you took it up your ass.

Reinaldo Arenas: The last time? Oh, I don't remember.

    Police Officer: No?

Reinaldo Arenas: But I remember the last time you did.

    Police Officer: When was that?

Reinaldo Arenas: Maybe the last time you bent over to tie your boots.
