"Beautiful Boy" is an unforgettable, deeply disturbing but well-made film. The film tells a dark theme. After a seemingly perfect son shoots wildly on a college campus, then shoots himself. The tragic consequences faced by his parents. Movies on the theme of exploring school violence are not new, but this time the horror incident is not staged or the murderer is shown. The unique perspective is seen through the eyes of parents who think they are not at fault. There is no simple answer to this tragic bereavement. Director Shawn Ku wisely refused to let the audience think. On the contrary, he plunged his character into the abyss of despair, so that the audience can feel the same. The result is a compact offensive and defensive psychological game, the core of which is the conflict between silent reflection and verbal violence, in which everything is examined after the fact. These performances are fearless, unconventional and unforgettable. "Beautiful Boy" is too bleak and painful to recommend unconditionally. The audience needs a strong body to watch calmly, but this is an exciting experience that makes the audience's knees weak
.
"Beautiful Boy" is the opposite of a feature film. Painful insight and ruthless jerky, the film makes the intimate observation of a troubled couple staged with such a low-key intensity, in the end, the audience is likely to feel as exhausted as a star embarrassed
.
The road to recovery is not easy. People's intrusive peeping and public speech may cause greater emotional pain than ever before. The focus of "Beautiful Boy" is entirely on Bill and Kate, and the story never tries to answer the question of why or how the tragedy happened. With this ambiguity, the film connects the audience with the couple in a broader sense. The audience is trying to make their intentions clear, and watching two master actors work hard for the same thing will exhaust the audience. Excellent photography techniques help create this experience and add more depth to the subject. Photographer Michael Femugna has always been part of the catastrophe on the screen. The strange angle and the dazzling scene make the audience feel as if they are participants rather than mere observers. If Shawn Ku does not ensure the excellent performance of the actors, then all will be in vain. Maria Bello and Michael Christopher Sheen have a very harmonious relationship on the screen, showing the peak and trough of their relationship. When the plot goes well, the audience will feel hopeful for the couple. But the existing problems seem to never disappear, and seeing them arguing and fighting is equally heartbreaking. Through organic film photography, weird real scripts and powerful performances, "Beautiful Boy" left a deep impression on the audience and something worth thinking about
.
Director Shawn Ku achieved a balance between formal control and emotional spontaneity in his debut novel "Beautiful Boy", which is impressive. This very low-key film tells how parents deal with guilt, incomprehension and mutual accusations after their teenage son shoots wildly on the college campus and then commits suicide. The wonderful performances of Maria Bello and Michael Christopher Sheen should be appreciated. However, to overcome the public's antipathy towards works with such tragic themes, something more important than criticality may be needed
