The film’s graphic designer Nathan Crowley built a workshop in director Christopher Nolan’s garage to complete the design and production of the main elements in the film. Nolan and the screenwriter David Goyer are creating the script in the room while working with Crowley on the idea of the Batmobile.
In previous Batman movies, the Batmobile has kept pace with the times and played to the extreme in publicity. The Batmobile in this film is a hybrid of Lamborghini and Hummer, combining the exquisiteness and agility of a sports car with the strength of a chariot.
In the story, the Batmobile is actually a prototype of a military vehicle called "The Tumbler". It was developed by Wayne Company to load personnel and equipment across trenches and facilitate passage in open areas. However, because of its high price, Wayne The company failed to put into production on a large scale, but was discovered by Batman and developed into a tool for justice.
Crowley and Nolan brought the complete three-dimensional plastic model car to Andrew Smith, the special effects workshop supervisor. In 6 months, Smith and his team completed 5 Batmobiles based on different prototypes. The Batmobile is equipped with a 5.7-liter 340-horsepower engine that can output 400 pounds of torque. The body is 9 feet 4 inches wide, 15 feet long, and weighs two and a half tons. It can accelerate from standstill to 60 mph in 5 seconds. Long jumps. The most unique aspect of the Batmobile is that it does not have a front axle, but supports the wheels on the side of the car body. The technicians increased the size of the rear wheels and arranged the engine and gearbox nearby. The Batmobile even has an insect-like waist, which twists when the horsepower is increased. In addition, the Batmobile is also equipped with 6 truck tires. In order to achieve the designed sideslip effect, tires with different degrees of wear are used in different scenarios, and the tire pressure must be adjusted accordingly. There are a total of eight Batmobiles used in the film, five of which are fully equipped, one electronic version is equipped with a movable roof for easy entry and exit, and two have no engine and are lightened to be ejected in special action scenes.
