He bought it fromthe author of the novel "In order to obtain the copyright of film production, I hope to make a film based on the story of this novel. Later, he found that the difficulty of making this movie was too high, so in April 1937, he sold the copyright of this movie to Walt Disney. Disney immediately embarked on the conception and production of this movie, and hoped that it could be their company's second feature-length animation since "Snow White", and also the first movie with a plot based on modern literary works. However, the original novel is originally suitable for adult readers, and its content is too "serious" and "depressing" for the children audiences that Disney attracts. Due to the complicated engineering of the film, Disney suspended the production plan for the film.
In 1938, Disney assignedandto produce thefor the film, but they joined the crew of the animated "Fantasia". In the end, Disney finally officially started making the movie on August 17, 1939, although the changes in personnel, location, and animation methods in the studio made the production progress much behind. The concept of the script was formally completed in July 1940, and until that time, the production funding for the film had been as high as US$858,000.
