Dawn Lodge was inspired by a news report in the "New York Times" and decided to put on the screen the story of a group of teenagers who traveled through the Midwest while selling magazines. For this reason, she went on six or seven road trips to find inspiration. I have seen that there are still shockingly poor people in the United States.
The film started shooting in May 2015 and was moved to Oklahoma, Missouri, Nebraska and many other places, and was finished in early July. Dawn Lodge said that this is her most self-persistent shooting, and she hopes that the kind of people shown in the film can get more social sympathy.
The director spent more than a year searching for suitable actors on the streets, and finally selected Sasha Lane, who had no acting experience at all, as the heroine; the actor attracted the "Transformers" Shia La Beouf who wanted to take the artist route.
