Marie, a young French village girl, and John Miller have a private lifelong agreement, but John's father strongly opposes this, so the two agree to elope. On the night of the elopement, John's father died of a sudden illness and was unable to rush to the station. Mary thought he had changed his mind and went to Paris alone. A few years later, Marie became the lover of the rich Pierre. John moved to Paris with his mother after his father's death and became a poor painter. One day, they reunite unexpectedly on the streets of Paris, and soon the old love rekindles, John's mother is not happy about it. To comfort his mother, John pretended that he would not marry Mary, but was heard by Mary, who happened to be visiting, outside the door. John informed Mary of the situation and committed suicide in front of her. When John's mother saw Mary's grief, she realized that Mary's love for John was genuine. Chaplin's first film directed without starring. Although the box office was bleak at the time, the evaluation of its film history is still quite high. By telling a simple sad story, Chaplin showed his excellent directing skills and cinematic language.
