Esther Blodgettis a Hollywood up-and-coming actress who makes her mark at a charity fundraiser for declining star Norman Maine. Soon fell in love with this older and more sophisticated man. And Norman was also deeply attracted by her naivety and liveliness. Norman created a few gigs for Esther that made her famous, and the two became lovers. Esther's growing career renown, thanks to his extraordinary talent, frustrated Norman, who was on the decline. He later became alcoholic and grumpy. Why do so many people think this story is about showbiz? It is clearly about love and life, and it mainly explores the tragedy and pain of falling in love with someone with addiction problems such as an alcoholic/gambler/addict. It's true that this kind of person loves you, and is often charismatic and passionate about you when healthy, but it's also true that they are physically and mentally weak and can't control themselves, and will destroy two people's lives. Some couples with mental and mental illness do the same...it's an unsolvable problem. Poor souls.
