With serious themes, exquisite pictures, vivid characters, Zhang Youzhi's rhythm, and a complete and coherent storyline, "A Royal Affair" can be used as a historical propaganda film to promote the Danish Enlightenment. In order to produce a serious and true work of historical reality, the show lacks heroic spirit and does not match the overall temperament of the Berlin Film Festival.
The film is not as exciting as expected. The intention of the film is obviously to present to the audience a Danish Ukiyo-e before the awakening of European freedom consciousness through a period of forbidden court love, but it did not unearth a broader image of the era with a long aftertaste. This makes the film unable to extract deep reflection and awareness from historical events.
