After the script was ready, New Line agreed to start shooting the film. The producer set up an office in Cronenberg's hometown of Toronto, Canada, and began recruiting the whole class in front of and behind the scenes. Photographer Peter Suscheski has filmed "Senses Games" and "Children's Nightmare". Cronenberg had no intention of asking Maria Bello to play the role, but when she met Cronenberg for the first time in Toronto, Cronenberg found that Bello and Mortensen matched well, making them suitable to play Tom's wife. Then Vigo Mortensen and Maria Bello were chosen to play the Stolls, and the American actors Ed Harris and William Hurt, whom Cronenberg admired, also joined the crew, playing the role of his son Jack in the film. Ashton Holmes was selected from 100 auditions in Los Angeles and Toronto.
